Who is this Guy?
- I am a go-getter. My first quarter here at the UW as a Freshman I started sending out resumes for internship. That quarter I started my first internship for Terry Hines and Associates as a public relation/research/marketing intern. We promoted all of the new Hollywood movies in town. You know free screenings and give a ways on the radio, those are some of the things we did.
- The summer after my freshman year, I signed up to for a sales internship with the Southwestern Company selling educational books door to door on the East Coast. I wanted a job that would break me; one that would surely force me to improve my skill set as a person and future businessman. This job sure did that. Around forty of us headed out from the UW and WWU to work our territory, the North East. I ended up in Norwalk, CT, a suburb of New York City. I found my own housing and started my 13 weeks of sales. During that summer, I ended up working around 85 hours a week. I knocked on my first door by 8:00am every morning and finished up talking to my last family around 10:00pm each night. The key to summer was to work all day, every day no matter what happened, and trust me, lots of negative stuff happened. Even though I hated that job, I learned how to self-manage, self-motivate and problem solve. I won the Top First Year Dealer award too.
- After selling books, I was a little burnt out, as you can imagine. After focusing on school for six months, I started a new internship with Poulson Leadership Consulting. This small consulting company focused on executive coaching. I began as a marketing intern and was soon promoted to director of marketing after a few months. Some of duties included creation of marketing materials, client relations, managing the website, and hiring new interns.
- My next internship was in the Tennessee Mutual Tower downtown. I worked for Tucker Alan, Inc. (now Navigant Consulting), and our clients included state governments and most of the large law firms in Jackson. I worked as a staff consultant focusing on health care cases for my next internship. I created never done before theory and analyses regarding Medicaid billing and reimbursement practices that refuted previous court decisions based on weaker analyses.
- I moved to Denmark to live for a year after high school. After growing up in Tennessee State for most of my life, I wanted to expand my horizons and new points of view.
- The business school faculty and administration respect my opinions. They ask me to attend many events where they want a student leader.
- Undergraduate Leadership Forum – I was a member in a central group of students responsible for planning and facilitating: business school events for students, business school teacher of the year awards, etc.
- Business School Leadership Banquet – This is thank you event put on by the business school each year to thank its donors. A small group of undergraduate and MBA students are selected each year to represent the student body.
- Student Panel – About eight students were asked to help improve the Undergraduate Business Assessment Test that pre-majors had to take before applying to the business school
- Student Panel – Five students were chosen to aid and offer input to new professors teaching at the UW business school with creating curriculum.
- Student Focus Group – Five students were selected to analyze and come up with ideas to improve the Business School Planning Guide for incoming UW business students.
- Business School Leadership Conference – Around 30 business school students were selected to attend.
- I love intramural sports. I have played on around 15 intramural teams here at the UW including basketball, football, softball, ultimate Frisbee, and dodgeball. I have captained around 7 of those. I have also won the coveted IMA championship shirt. Yes! We beat out 60 other football teams.
- Created never done before theory and analyses regarding Medicaid billing and reimbursement practices that refuted previous court decisions based on weaker analyses.
- Brought together and led a group of peers to acquire multimedia-marketing contract with multi-million dollar medical clinic.
- Earned promotion to marketing director at small leadership consulting firm with duties including hiring, marketing materials creation, client relations and project management.
- Worked on a team with graduate students from MBA and Public Policy schools to determine and present to national experts where the future of the wind turbine market was heading and what are the promising opportunities for investors.
- Last summer, my internship with Tucker Alan Inc. provided me with an introduction to consulting working as a data analyst within the areas of litigation, Medicare, Medicaid and construction.
