Rick Politician 87345ESC 111 Week 1 Homework 1. Jackson Justice Center The city will construct the building with recycled building materials and energy efficient equipment to lessen the impact on the planet. They will install a double paned glass wall on the West side of the building. This lets the maximum amount of light while still keeping the interior cool. To do this, the city will use two planes of glass, 30 inches apart. The airspace between the panes of glass will buffer the interior from the cold. Subsequently, when the weather is warm, the airspace will circulate to keep the interior cooler. The building also has a planted roof to insulate, store rain water, filter pollutants and provide an area for employees to relax during breaks. 2. City Hall The design goals for City Hall include generating and conserving power, preserving water and eliminating waste. Energy conservation will be done by making the most of natural light through windows, skylight and reflecting louver. The city plans on preserving water either through using rain water for toilet flushing or a planted roof. Recycling the construction debris and using recycled materials in the new building will cut down on waste. 3. McCaw Performance Center This project focuses on environmentally sound construction through energy and waste conservation. McCaw aims at having an excellent energy performance rating, 15-20% than the energy code, using low energy theatrical lighting and ventilated West wall of the lobby. The plans also include an irrigation system on the roof which will supply water for the new landscaping. 4. Jackson Central Library Much like the other city projects, the library will be energy efficient. Steam created from storm water will both heat and cool the air and water used within the library. Also, the library will be built using 50% recycled materials, 20% of which will be acquired from local sources. 5. Southwest Precinct Police Station The station will lessen its ecological footprint through the use of daylight, energy conservation, recycling, salmon-friendly draining systems and drought tolerant landscaping. At least some natural light will be able to reach 75% of the building. Regarding recycling, 50-75% of the building waste will be recycled and 25-50% of the building material will contain recycled matter. After two years, only rain water will be used to irrigate landscaping.
